Rep. James Thibault, a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, provided live updates on the first legislative session day of 2026 through his Twitter account.
In a post dated January 7, 2026, Thibault announced the start of the session: “Today is the first session day of 2026! Follow along here for live updates on the votes! “
Later that day, Thibault reported on a motion by Democratic lawmakers to suspend House rules in order to introduce new taxes. He stated: “Dem motion to suspend the rules to introduce new taxes rejected 57-280” (January 7, 2026).
In another tweet posted at the same time, Thibault detailed an action by Democratic Representative Tom Oppel: “Dem Rep. Tom Oppel rises to move a suspension of House Rules to introduce a bill to restore the interest and dividends tax—after the bill filing period and after being rejected by the Rules Committee. Not only does the proposed bill harm Granite Staters, but the motion has no” (January 7, 2026).
The interest and dividends tax was previously eliminated in New Hampshire as part of ongoing efforts to reduce state-level taxation. The process for introducing new legislation in New Hampshire typically requires bills to be filed within a designated period and reviewed by relevant committees before reaching a floor vote.
