Rep. James Thibault, a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, alerted his followers on August 5, 2025, that his social media account had been compromised and subsequently secured.
In a post at 11:32 a.m. UTC, Thibault warned followers about suspicious messages sent from his account earlier that day. He wrote, “Anyone who received a DM from me this morning: my account got hacked. Please DON’T CLICK ANY LINKS YOU GOT. My password has now been reset, so my account should be secure.”
Shortly after, at 11:41 a.m. UTC, Thibault updated followers on the scope of the incident and his ongoing efforts to address it individually with those affected. He stated, “Trying to reach out to everyone individually but they got to seemingly my entire follower list so it’s gonna be a while”.
Later in the day at 1:08 p.m. UTC, Thibault shifted focus to legislative matters and shared news about legislation he supported: “Glad to see this bill I cosponsored get signed! https://t.co/8wStsudVl1”.
Incidents involving social media account compromises are not uncommon among public officials and can pose risks for misinformation or phishing attempts targeting constituents. In response to such events, experts recommend prompt communication with followers and immediate action such as resetting passwords and reviewing security settings.
