Belknap County Sheriff Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 15.
Get in the habit of dialing 10 digits now!
‘9-8-8’ has been designated as the national abbreviated dialing code to be used exclusively for access to the national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system. ‘9-8-8’ implementation is scheduled to take effect July 2022.
On October 24, 2021, you will be REQUIRED to dial 10 digits (area code + telephone number) to place a phone call. On and after October 24, local calls dialed with only seven digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. If you get this recording, you must hang up and dial again using the area code with the 7-digit telephone number.
